Who We Are
Veterans Asbestos & Family Benefits is an independent educational website run by a small editorial team. We research and publish plain-language guides on two closely related subjects: how and where members of the U.S. military were exposed to asbestos — by branch, ship, shipyard, occupation, and era — and what spouses, survivors, and families of veterans diagnosed with mesothelioma may be able to receive, from Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) and burial benefits to caregiver support programs and neutral explanations of how asbestos trust funds and compensation claims work as concepts.
We built this site because families facing a mesothelioma diagnosis are usually researching under the worst possible circumstances. Much of what they find online is written by marketing departments whose real goal is to capture a phone number. We wanted a place where a surviving spouse or an adult child could simply learn — what happened, why it happened decades ago, what help exists, and where the free, official sources of that help are — without ever being pushed toward a form, a hotline, or a sales pitch.
Our Mission
Our mission is to explain the military asbestos story and the family-benefits landscape in calm, accurate, eighth-grade-readable language. That means defining every term the first time it appears, citing official sources for every factual claim, stating deadlines and eligibility rules factually rather than with fear or urgency, and always pointing readers toward free, accredited help rather than paid intermediaries.
What This Site Is Not
Because this subject sits at the intersection of terminal illness, federal benefits, and heavily marketed legal claims, we want to be unusually clear about what we are not:
- We are not a law firm. No one on our team is acting as your attorney, and nothing we publish is legal advice.
- We do not refer cases to attorneys. We never name, rank, or recommend any law firm or claims company, we accept no referral fees, and we operate no “free case review” service of any kind.
- We are not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or any other government agency, and we are not endorsed by any of them.
- We are not VA-accredited. We cannot prepare, present, or prosecute a VA claim on anyone’s behalf, and we do not evaluate individual claims.
- We sell nothing. There are no products, services, consultations, courses, or subscriptions here. The site is supported by third-party display advertising only.
If you need help with a VA benefits question, a free, VA-accredited Veterans Service Organization such as DAV, VFW, or The American Legion can assist you at no cost. If you have a legal question, your state bar association’s lawyer referral service is a neutral place to start.
How Our Content Is Produced
Every guide on this site is researched and written by our editorial team from primary and official sources. We rely on VA.gov for benefit rules, eligibility criteria, and published rate ranges; the CDC’s Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for health and exposure science; GAO and RAND reports for how asbestos bankruptcy trust funds actually operate; Navy historical records for ship classes, shipyards, and eras of asbestos use; and the published materials of established Veterans Service Organizations. We deliberately do not cite or link to law-firm marketing sites or lead-generation “resource centers,” no matter how polished they look.
Each article carries a visible “reviewed and updated” date, and we re-verify time-sensitive details — such as DIC rates, which change periodically — against the official source before refreshing that date.
